We got an early start with breakfast and were on the road at 8. Drove for about 8 hours and then arrived at Philmont. We got our tent assignment, dinner, and even had time to spare at the Trading Post. All in all a good day. Tomorrow is orientation, full check-in, Philmont museum, and more. Kids are having fun.

Today was our first full day at base camp and it was a good day overall. We went through orientation with our ranger. We also reviewed our trek on maps, mapped out a few days ahead trail-wise, and picked up food and crew gears. Scouts were weighing packs, figuring out who would get what crew gear, and more. We did medical checks to make sure everyone was ready for the trip. Group photos for Crew 1 and 2 were taken with the Tooth of Time in the background. The scouts also went to the Trading Post for various things such as gear, souvenirs, and more. The Scout leaders and adults did leader training as well. The weather was clear and sunny until dinner when it poured for around two hours. We ended the day by playing some frisbee and an evening program.

Today, Crew #1 hiked 3.8 miles to our first camp at Heck Meadows. It was hot and dry for the first half of the day and then it rained on and off for a few hours. We played cards under a tarp while it rained. Then we put our food up on bear ropes/bags and set up tents. After that we had dinner and relaxed at night, was a great day overall.

Today, Crew 1 had a short and hot hike between campsites. We set up camp with bear bags, rain fly, and tents. Then we relaxed and played some games. Most of the crew rode horses for a couple of hours. Kids enjoyed some of the camp activities as well. We had Chuck Wagon dinner at 5 and enjoyed coffee with some more games. Then we relaxed and prepared ourselves for the hike tomorrow.

Crew #1 hiked a total of 7.5 miles from Cimmarroncita to Santa Claus camp. The total incline for the trip was about 1,700 feet. Got to camp and reloaded shotgun shells at the firing range. We were able to shoot shotgun at 5 pm and we had 6 hits (skeet shooting). A storm rolled in shortly after and with it came wind, rain, and some hail. The temperature dropped to the lower 50’s. After that, we made dinner, chilled, and slept.

Crew #2 reached the summit of Mount Baldy which is quite an accomplishment!
Tuesday, July 12, 2022
Today, Crew #1 hiked from Santa Claus camp to Ewells Park, covering 8.5 miles with a 1,000 foot gain in elevation. On the way we were stopped at the Head of Dean where the scouts played volleyball and ate lunch. We had some light rain when we hiked out. About 2 miles out, we had to put a tarp on the trail because of the rain. After a bit we hiked to the Baldy Skyline camp where it poured. We set up the tarp once more as it rained and thundered. When the rain finally let up, we hiked up to our campsite for the night. After setting up tents and tarps, we cooked dinner and went to bed as early as possible and then it started to rain and hail.
